Racism and intolerance statement

Nearly four weeks on from the shocking killing of George Floyd, the consequences continue to reverberate around the world.  Black Lives Matters protests in the UK have prompted widespread debate about our country’s imperial past, the current state of our society, and what the future may look like.  At the same time, data from Public Health England has shown that people from ethnic minority groups, and particularly black people, are disproportionately affected by COVID-19.

Like the rest of the country, we have been reflecting on these issues, as well as listening to their experiences of our BAME staff members, many of whom have experienced racism during their careers.  As doctors, all of us have witnessed both racist incidents and structural racism in the wider NHS.  While we are fortunate to look after a fantastic, supportive community, we have unfortunately had to address several incidents of racism over the years at Conisbrough Group Practice, too.

Racism is not a pleasant topic to discuss, but this doesn’t mean we should avoid discussing it.  We would like to take this opportunity to re-iterate that Conisbrough Group Practice strongly condemns racism in all its forms.  There are no valid excuses and the practice will simply not tolerate it.
